The Breaking Point That Should’ve Never Been Ignored
It didn’t start with the crying.
It started with the soft asks.
The gentle nudges.
The calmly spoken words in moments of vulnerability.
The repeated check-ins.
The “Hey, I’m not okay.”
The “Can you sit with me in this?”
But I got brushed aside.
Minimized.
Laughed off.
Told I was “too sensitive,” “too much,” “too emotional.”
Sound familiar?
This is what happens when society conditions women—especially Black women—to be strong, silent, and self-sacrificing. Our emotional expression isn’t seen as data. It’s dismissed as dramatics. So we stuff it down. We smile through the ache. Until the tears break through, screaming louder than our words ever could.
This piece was born from that moment—the one where your heart hits the floor and suddenly, people start listening.
But here’s what I’ve realized:
Your quiet pain should be enough.
Your calm voice should be heard.
Your early warnings should be taken seriously.
And if someone only responds to your tears, they’re not truly connected to you.
They’re reacting to the consequences of their neglect, not your humanity.
This spoken word is for the women who’ve been invisible until their breakdown made noise.
It’s for the ones who warned you 10 times and still got ignored.
It’s for us.
